fuel eco, add ons, HP, smart maintanance, help my car?
ok my car is a 92 cadillac with a gas hogging 4.9 v8pfi motor. i am willing to invest 500 to 1500 in my car. but want a good return on my investment. mainly in the form of hp, fuel econ, and bolstering long term durability.... in that order. with that said i'll tell u what i have already done to the car in my 5 yrs of owning. replaced battery, the terminals and alternator, replaced spark plugs cap and rotor?? pcv valve o2 senser set timeing and wires too.. i did all that myself about a year and half after i bought it . so should i repeat??? in the last 2 years i've bought new 20in chrome wheels & tires and new shocks, replace the water pump and starter and got a flowmaster 50 muffler not to mention the ignition when some asshole tried to steal it.. and here are some of the ideas i want to run by yah msd/crane ignition and new "nice" plugs? flush tran, motor, injector cleaning? should i worry about gaskets or timeing chain? k&n filter? thanks u! once u go lac u never go back

- A programmer? I put a predator diablo on my truck and it's done wonders in the power and fuel arena's.
- Ok I got ALOT of tips for you so here they are To improve horsepower try this: 1. Switch to a performance air filter or a cold-air intake system. 2. A cat-back high-performance exhaust system will add power by reducing backpressure in the exhaust. 3. A hand-held reprogrammer or tuner will advance timing, optimize fuel delivery, and change shift points on automatic transmissions. 4. Performance exhaust headers improve the flow of exhaust out of your engine and reduce exhaust backpressure. 5. Aftermarket ignition systems can provide a hotter spark. 6. Nitrous systems can improve horsepower anywhere from 50 to 500 horsepower. 7. Supercharger systems usually INCREASE power by 50%. Here are some tips to help your fuel economy: 1. Keep tires inflated to recommended pressure and within one pound of each other. Low tire pressure can cost 1-2 mpg. 2. Dragging brakes can decrease fuel economy. Regular brake inspections will help you keep your car rolling and stopping. 3. Synthetic lubricants have been proven to greatly reduce friction in engines and differentials. Reduced friction means better mileage and more power. Dirty oil can cost up to 0.5 mpg in fuel economy. 4. Keep air filter clean, or upgrade to a high-flow filter element. Add fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank every 5,000 miles to help injectors vaporize fuel properly. A dirty air filter can cost up to 2 mpg in fuel economy. 5. Regular tune-ups are crucial to engine efficience. Replace spark plug wires every 50,000 - 60,000 miles, depending on how severe your driving conditions are. A complete tune-up can yield as much as 10 mpg! 6. Acceleration requires more horsepower and uses additional fuel. The harder you accelerate, the more fuel you use. Go easy on the gas. 7. Air conditioning is one of those parasitic losses that can be eliminated by simply turning off a switch. This is a big one - usually woth 1-2 mpg. Additional Tip: Improper wheel alignment or a dragging brake could double the required horsepower, cutting fuel economy by up to 20 percent. Ok, finally you wanted to know what you can do to improve durability. I'm guessing what you mean is you want to improve the reliability of the vehicle. All I can really say is keeping changing your oil and use synthetic oil this will reduce sludge and will lengthen the engines life. Flush your radiator every 1-2 years. Keep a close watch on all your fluids. That's about it. Ok now one last thing...these are all tips and suggestions I am not telling you that one time is better than another. It is up to you to decide what you want to put on your vehicle. Hope this helps and good luck!!
