Torque and Chrome

If I buy new rims+tires that are already on another car can I just switch them to my car and drive away?

Do I have to do anything so my car will ride ok. I am going from stock 16 inch rims with normal tires to 18 inch chrome rims with low profile tires. I have a Pontiac it is 5 lug and the new rims are universal so it has however many lugs that is.

  1. As long as it has the same number of lugs and they are the same size (which they usually are). but for example, ford + chevy = incompatible (ford uses 4 lugnuts, chevy and most others use 5). Okay well I think some fords may use 5. Anyway just make sure it has the same number of holes and the holes are the same size/distance apart, otherwise you don't have to do anything.
  2. You have to check the offset of the rim, the wrong one will cause poor handling. Offset is what actually locates the wheel and tire, relative to the vehicle suspension. Here is a quick explanation. http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech/techpage.jsp?techid=101 http://www.miata.net/garage/offset.htm So-called universal rims normally are ordered with the correct offset to match your vehicle. If you do not know the off-set of these wheels, and your stock wheels, and are not purchasing them from a tire specialist who has those figures available, you risk problems. http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/brochure/info/tmpInfoWheelOffsets.jsp
