Torque and Chrome

i have a boat trailer with chrome wheels that have what i think is aluminum coating over top of the chrome.?

i want to remove the aluminum from the chrome so the wheels shine. what can i use to remove the aluminum? we arent a 100% sure its aluminum but thats what it looks like and feels like. no matter what it is what could i possibly use to remove it?

  1. sorry but most wheel are either steel chrome or aluminum cant really be most... you sure its not paint peeling off or the chrome.. sounds odd
  2. Do the wheels have a plastic clear coat over the chrome that has gone hazy and now the chrome doesn't shine like when new...or are they brushed aluminum? They won't be a two stage metal wheel...
  3. Sounds like a galvanized dipped steel wheel. They dip them to prevent rust and corrosion. If you remove that coating and don't properly seal the metal it will rust and corrode very quickly.
  4. Unless someone has painted what were originally chrome plated wheels, you wont have "plating" ove "plating", at least not aluminum over chrome. It won't work. Chrome plating (show quality anyway) is a several step process. The base is first polished to a high sheen, then copper plate, then nickle plated, then chromium plated, then polished again. Some even polish between the plating steps. I would bet your wheels have a powder coat over semi-polished aluminum, not aluminum over chrome. Whatever is on the outside now, if applied by the factory is intended to be the final coating. What is underneath that coating will not handle the elements.
  5. Are you sue that you dont have polished aluminum rims? That looks like chrome. Frank
  6. It sounds like someone painted them with galvie paint, try a little paint remover on it and see if it comes off.
