Torque and Chrome

Help me identify a hand tool, please,?

I have acquired a torque wrench. It says Adjustable Metal Handle Micrometer Torque Wrench: CDI 1501MRMHSS I have the Certificate of Calibration. My question is this: What is this used for? And if I wanted to sell it what would it be worth? Thank you for any information anyone can provide. I have original case, original paperwork, and NO attachments - didn't come with any.

  1. It's used for (more or less) the same things as a standard wrench. Impossible to say what it's worth without a picture, does it come with attachments?
  2. Its used for tightening nuts and bolts up to a specific tightness setting called "torque". Generally you use them so that you don't over or under tighten the nuts. e.g. When you rebuild an engine you tighten the cylinder head bolts with a torque wrench so that they are at the correct tightness. You set the tightening force on the wrench and then tighten the nut, when the required force is reached the ratchet in wrench slips so you can't tighten it any further. See : http://www.cscforce.com/xcart/CDI-Torque-MICRO-ADJUSTABLE-TORQUE-WRENCHES-Flex-Head-English-Dual-Scale.html They cost about USD 100 new. Don't throw away the calibration certificate as that will help it hold its value if the certificate hasn't expired. http://www.toolsource.com/1501mrmh-drive-microadjustable-torque-wrench-ratchet-head-20150-inlb-p-94370.html
  3. A torque wrench is used when the firmness of a bolt or nut has to be tightened to a certain tightness on most vehicles or other machinery with moving parts. they usually slip or break at a particular lbs or kg force to stop over tightening, when I say break I don't mean broken more like it gives a bit to indicate the bolt is tight enough. With regard to price it greatly depends on the quality of the instrument but I would think something in the range of £30+ would be about right.
  4. Basically, a torque wrench is used when tightening nuts and bolts to ensure you don't overtighten them and risk snapping the bolt. You set the wrench to the required amount of pressure (measured in pounds) and then tighten the nut. Once the pounds setting is reached the some wrenches like yours will 'break free' to prevent you tightening the nut further. On other more basic torque wrenches you must look a a scale on the tool to ensure you don't overtighten. You seem to have a very good quality wrench. See the amazon link below for its price.
  5. we need a name and the torque is it in foot pounds, inch pounds or another measurement how long is the handle example snap-on foot pound torque wrench - 30" handle - dial indicator up to 500lbs that tells me how big the wrench is and how much work it is capable of we use torque wrenches daily (specialized heavy diesel repair) depending upon the maker and how heavy it can go makes or breaks the value we have torque wrenches as tall as 10 y/o children and as small as a cat this is one type http://www.hydraulicpumpsmotors.com/2010/10/20/torque-wrenches-2/ this is another http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.jlwinstruments.com/img/cdimicri.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.jlwinstruments.com/cdi.htm&usg=__s2t2RVzyHUGu9yCR70cUdXfwf6A=&h=371&w=539&sz=42&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=sl6Rh8jz5YAPqM:&tbnh=105&tbnw=153&ei=NVu5TZHqMcKctwev7rXeBA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dtorque%2Bwrenches%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive%26biw%3D939%26bih%3D597%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=564&page=1&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:0&tx=104&ty=57 here is one like many of ours http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/216yZ3P1rYL._SL500_AA300_.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.shoppingkoo.com/products-search/torque-wrenches.html&usg=__wPxxwW5SH8rmk55d32N7VrFEqGE=&h=300&w=300&sz=5&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=Yc_FnXdPhUFXXM:&tbnh=108&tbnw=179&ei=rlu5TYT2IcahtweEpcXeBA&prev=/search%3Fq%3D500%2Bft%2Blb%2Btorque%2Bwrenches%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive%26sa%3DG%26biw%3D939%26bih%3D597%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=143&vpy=263&dur=5316&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=100&ty=125&page=1&ndsp=17&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:0 here is a picture of one of the "used daily" ones, in the shop - its as long as my arm and then some http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.bidspotter.com/auctions/12981/thumbnails/135-1-4.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.bidspotter.com/forms/resultslogin.php%3Fgallery%3D12981%26page%3D2&usg=__o-bCsWhsuqEUUT22-tRTP2MssH4=&h=188&w=250&sz=11&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=-iSp8xeCQiwHeM:&tbnh=112&tbnw=149&ei=1lu5Td-NF8-BtgfIg8HeBA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dsnap%2Bon%2B500%2Bft%2Blb%2Btorque%2Bwrenches%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive%26biw%3D939%26bih%3D597%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=707&vpy=200&dur=441&hovh=112&hovw=149&tx=128&ty=101&page=1&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:0 most of them have sockets that do come with them but in a separate compartments/cases
