Briggs and Stratton 13.5 I/C head tension and valve clearances?

Iv got a 13.5 hp B/S in the ride on mower and just replaced the head gasket, according to the mower shop the head bolts should be tighten to 220 lbs ! my torque wrench only goes to 120lbs ! I have checked on the net and it is also listed at 220lbs but this simply can not be right, I have tried twice to torque it down but as soon as I hit 30lbs the bolts snap ! even the head bolts on a V8 are not 220lbs ! Does anyone have the correct pressure for the head bolts? (I'm guessing around 22lbs it closer to the truth) and the valve clearances as well. Thanks all in advance for any useful help.

  1. Barry, those torque specs are in inch pounds, not foot pounds. Try this site for torque specs and valve clearances. 220 inch pounds is about 18 foot pounds. Search inch pounds to foot pounds for a conversion chart or divide the inch pound number by 12.
