Torque and Chrome

Finding torque using cross product?

The specifications for a tractor state that the torque on a bolt with head size 7/8 inch cannot exceed 200 food-pounds. Determine the maximum force F that that can be applied to the wrench so as not to exceed the limit.

  1. If L = effective wrench moment arm................max F = 200/L
  2. Maximum Force that can be applied to the "wrench" = Maximum torque / length of wrench arm. = 200 ft.lb / length of wrench arm. Since the length of length of the bench arm is Not given in the problem, then just call it "L" Maximum Force that can be applied to the "wrench" = 200 / L where L = length of wrench arm, from point of applying force to center of bolt. ---------------------- If you want the maximum force on "bolt head", then Maximum Force = Maximum Torque x (1/2 of bolt head diameter) = 200 ft.lb x (1/2 * 7/8 *1/12 inch/ft) = 7.29 lb >>> This is the maximum Force that can be applied "directly" the head of the bolt.
