Torque and Chrome

i need to tighten the clutch cable on my motorcycle?

ok i have 1997 HD Sportster. I had some apes put on a few months back and use it to go to work and make little runs. nothing big. Since i put the new apes on they came with new cables clutch lever and brake lever and all the controls. everything is actual harley davidson parts just changes the controls from black to chrome. Well everything went on pretty easy but i have not been able to adjust the clutch lever properly. Half way down the clutch cable there are couple of nuts that i have been adjusting and I can get all of the play out of the clutch lever but it only last for a few miles and then i get slack back in the lever. The slack will get so bad that at times it is impossible to shift. like a said i adjust the nuts again and the slack is out but it doesn't last long. i would like to know a permanent way to fix this or maybe the correct way cause i am not sure if i am doing it right. please help thanks

  1. Sportster with ape hangars pretty well says it all.
  2. The lead (the little slug of soft metal) cable to perch holder is not tight on the cable.
  3. Go to a mechanic and ask him to fix it. Look carefully how he adjusts to clutch in the right way.
  4. adjust the slack at the engine case.
  5. Clutch cable adjustment starts at the clutch with the cable fully slack. Any changes made only to the cable will get you nowhere until you adjust the clutch. After the clutch is in spec, the cable is adjusted. All slack is NOT taken out. HD clutch cables are adjusted cold, the slack tends to go away when hot. The correct way is described in the service manual.
