How much more is a used car worth with custom wheels?
We are looking to sale our 2003 Acura MDX. We can't find what any private parties are asking in our area (Oregon) but dealers are asking for about $16,500 for comparable MDXs. Ours has 20" boss chrome wheels (retails around $2000) and we just replaced all 4 tires with $150 all terrain tires last month. We were thinking the private saler's value was probably around $14,000 but how much more can we expect to get since we have the nice wheels on it?

- Trade sale value is un altered by custom wheels and tires. Put your old ones back on and sell the custom ones in your local weekly Auto Trader or similar publication.
- 10 cents more for the wheels. No one cares if they are fancy or plain, just that they are in good shape.
- Unfortunatly your rims and wheels do nothing to help the value of your car. Putting anything on your car that is aftermarket (ie anything that did not come from the dealership) does nothing for the value. What you did (although it is probably nice) was limit the marketablity of you car. When you add something to your car (rims, exhaust, etc) you are creating a smaller market for that car. A kid that gets a Honda Civic and puts exhaust, rims, and a spoiler on is actually reducing the value of that car. If he wants to sell it he had to find someone who likes his modifications. Your best bet is to put all the factory parts back on the car if you still have them. You are not going to get the Kelly Blue Book value of your car with aftermarket parts. Even though your car has some nice rims and tires doesnt mean anything. My advice would be to put the original tires back on and sell the car to a dealership and they sell your aftermaket tires and rims seperate. It may take a little more time to get rid of the wheels but you would probably make more money in the long run. Keep in mind this market sucks. Good luck.
- Unless you happen to find a buyer that loves your wheels, they don't increase its value at all.
