  1. Chrome plating is not a do it yourself job. Lots of specialized equipment required. Lots of extremely toxic chemicals involved. Special licensing required to handle these extremely toxic chemicals. Lots of training involved. The raw materials are also expensive. Depending on the quality of the chrome it will either be a 2 or a three step process. First the finish of the metal getting chromed must be perfect. Even the slightest defect in the metal will show. In between each step there is a series of dipping the parts in different chemicals and cleaning for the next step. These chemicals are expensive. Then the metal is plated with copper. This helps the next materials bond to the metal so the chrome doesn't peel off later. Copper is expensive Next the metal is plated with nickel. Nickel is expensive Then it will get at least one coat of chrome. Better quality jobs will get more than one layer of chrome. Chromium is expensive. Finally the part must be buffed to bring out the finish. Labor for a professional is expensive. Most times the cost of getting a part chromed can exceed the cost of a new price. Most times the only time someone will go through all of this trouble and expense is to restore a very hard to get part for a collectible car. Or for a high end custom application where money is no object.
  2. I think you have answered your own question. It will be less expensive, and you will get a better looking wheel by purchasing new ones rather than chroming the old ones.
  3. Unless you're absolutely 100% sure what you're doing I wouldn't even try.
  4. Chrome plating is expensive because the chemicals are extremely hazardous and the costs related to disposing of them are expensive.
