Impact Wrench?

I'm purchasing a new impact wrench soon but I don't know what specifics to look for. Like, Amps, torque, etc. Electric or hydraulic, I'm confused as to what I need. Any Mechanics in here, that can give me some base numbers for specs on this tool? I'll be using it for my car.

  1. Go to NAPA or Sears and talk to some knowledgeable people and tell them how the tool is going to be used and you will probably learn all you need to know.
  2. if ya got a proper air commpresser go air if you do not get an electric
  3. Make sure you get one with the highest torque rating you can. If you are getting a pneumatic one, make sure it won't overwork your compressor. Most impacts require 3.5-6 CFM @ 90 psi or so. Ingersoll-Rand or Chicago Pneumatic are both adequate for the do-it-yourselfer. Make sure you use a quality air tool oil and grease. Some impacts have a grease fitting for the motor bearings on the back side of them ( a small round disc with a ball in the center). Unless you do not have an air compressor, I would stay away from electric ones, but if you must, Milwaukee tools makes a decent one, as does Dewalt. The cordless ones are handy, but if you are doing heavy work with it, the battery life could be a concern.
  4. your better off getting a 1/2" drive air powered And something with a built in regulator And capable of 240 ft lbs
  5. my IR 231 has to be over 25 years old and still funtions great with proper maint.
