How to strip or activate chrome before gold plating?

I want to gold plate the bezel of my iPhone. I done it last time but I had to sand the chrome with fine paper to create a key so the gold plate would stick. But this time i want to do it properly and activate the chrome so I don't loose the reflection. Anyone got any ideas?

1. You can't really plate gold over chrome - you need to strip the chrome off to the nickel plating underneath, then gold plate. Stripping is usually via a chemical method and best left to someone who handles these chemicals - such as an electroplater.
