Is it safe to work in a chrome-plating factory?

I have heard that many of the chemicals necessary to the electroplating process are mutagens and exposure to these vapors can lead to cancer among other things. Does anyone know if it is safe to work under these conditions, and are there any studies about the health issues of chrome-plating workers vs a control group? Any M.D.s have an opinion?

1. My friends owned a chrome-plating shop for 20 years. I hung out there a lot. So far, none of us have cancer. Oh, that was the 70's thru the 90's.
