How to clean Chrome rims?

I just bought a new car that has chrome rims and the outside of the rims are very clean but the inside lip of them are pretty dirty i sprayed rim cleaner on them that said safe on all wheels and while i was trying to clean them i began to get chrome paint chips on my rag. any idea how to cclean them with out pulling off the paint.
