Torque and Chrome

Painting motorcycle rims?

I am working on painting the rims black for my 1973 CB450. I have already bead blasted the (pitted/rusty) chrome off of the rims and am debating which paint would be the most durable. How would you rate duplicolor, vht, or any other black wheel paints? Thanks in advance. P.S. I already filled the pits with jb weld, so powder coating is not an option.

  1. Hi, I was going to tell you that powder coating is the only way to go on Bike rims, but you have eeliminatedthat process. I would use a two part epoxy system and of couse in the color you want. Rims take a beating and so the coating should be very durable. By the way, next time don't use JB weld. There is a product you can use that is a high temp filler that can be used with powder coatings...I am sorry but I don't remeber the name of that product.
  2. the best rattle can spray would be capillary paint. primer, sand tell smooth, then paint. sand again then clear coat. sand tell shine. use like a 1200 at the end for best shine :-) as far as brands, it doesn't matter. auto zone has some good products
  3. I wouldn't worry about powder coating on street bike rims, paint is fine, its available in more colors and has deeper more lustrious shine. However, when sandblasting and painting bare metal you may want to use an etching primer, ask for a "zinc chromate primer"
