Torque and Chrome

I want to paint my motorcycle pipes black. Should I use a primer of some sort?

I'm painting the worn chrome pipes on my motorcycle and I wanted to know if there is a primer or adhesion promoter i should use before applying the high heat black paint.

  1. you can use [high heat] spray paint
  2. You'll probably want to prepare the chrome surface by sanding or sandblasting.
  3. read the instructions on the tin/can. if it says apply to bare metal go ahead. if not read further and check if you need an under coat. most likely you want need a primer because high heat resistant paint usually doesnt need it.
  4. just sand them down too scuff up the surface.
  5. I would sand it first... I painted the exhaust of my Vstar 650 Classic with a high-heat black paint that had ceramic powder back in the days and it held pretty good. The only issue I had was a little graying at the area where the baffles were. I am still surprised that the headers did better :) Also, check the label of the paint spray-can for instructions. It is good to cure the paint by heating it up - this would make it more durable to heat...
