Can anyone suggest a method of removing rust from chrome?
I am rebuilding my motorcycle and the mufflers as well as some other small parts have some rust on them. I priced re-chroming and it will cost more than a new set of mufflers. Any suggestions on a decent method that will get rid of the rust without scratching up the chrome?

- use an sos pad that you use to clean dishes with that works good
- Of course, chromium plating does not rust... The rust is coming through the plating from the base metal beneath, therefore the chrome will never look as good as new but one can come close if the rusting isn't too extensive. Any cleaner, cleanser, polish that has a bit of mild abrasive is good. Auto paint 'rubbing compound' is good. There are chrome cleaners available at the auto supply store, Comet cleanser works well, and for more extensive rusting, Comet with a bit of steel wool works nicely. It's important that you use only moderate pressures in scrubbing the rust off so as to not cut into and dull the remaining plating. At any rate the best course is to start out with something very mild and work into more abrasive only as necessary to do the job. After the chrome is cleaned it's important to keep paste wax or a polish that will seal the surface to keep the rust from coming back through....
