Cleaning hard to clean wheels?

The rims on my car (not chrome) are really difficult to clean because the dirt is kind of stuck to the rim (I guess they weren't cleaned regularly by the previous owner). I have tried cleaning them using a wheel cleaning spray and a brush and very little luck. I'm wondering if there's a liquid solution or a gel or something that I could use to clean them up. Thanks.

2. if you have an autozone around gothere and get meguaers all wheel cleaner, it smells nasty but the stuff really works well, let it set a min or two, then use the brush ive had many stubborn dirty rims come clean after using this!

Disclaimer- what I'm about to recommend is an aggressive solution to your problem, and since I don't know what kind of vehicle and wheels you have (other than they're not chrome) it's to be done at your own risk. We repair all kinds of wheels professionally. What we do is as follows: Obtain a chrome & wire wheel cleaner at your autoparts store, and a 'spoke brush' if the wheel spokes are close together. This cleaner has a fair amount of acid in it, so use gloves and safety glasses, and do it out doors for ventilation. Have your water source, garden hose, pressure washer, etc at the ready, and after wetting the wheel down with water, spray the cleaner on and begin brushing. Rinse and repeat as necessary. Where people get in trouble doing this stuff is by spraying the acid onto a dry wheel and then walking away or going to work another wheel. The acid can then act on the paint and soften or stain it. So do one at a time. You'll be amazed at the results!
