Torque and Chrome

What the process to painting spoke wheels on a motorcycle?

I have a 1976 Honda cb750F SS with ugly chrome wheels and some rust pits. I would like to paint them with black base coat & then clear coat. Any advice on the process would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  1. sand, primer, sand, paint, clear... in that order
  2. get 'em powder coated, spray paint will wear off rims fairly quickly.... but if you're determined to do so, probably the best way to do it would be to take the entire rim apart and paint each peice seperately, and then reassemble.... not only does it make the paint job look cleaner and more professional, it also keeps from globbing paint over nuts/bolts/screws/etc.... which if you paint over, look like shit the first time you have to take them back out, tighten them or even losen them. make sure you use warm soapy water to wash the peices down with, and then wipe clean with a rag or tact cloth. (after sanding of course) i'd also find a way to suspend the rims and hubs at the least, from the ceiling, so you can apply even coats without having to worry about touching the wet paint, or laying it down so that the paint runs and globs to the sides.....
  3. if you have "rust pits" i would think you'll need to have them sand blasted before painting. another option would be to have them have them powercoated.
