Torque and Chrome

I want to polish chrome plating on a vintage motorcycle?

  1. There are several very good chrome polishes out there. As long as the chrome is not damaged, just about any of them will do. Also, do a search for your type of motorcycle. You will probably be amazed at how much you can find on them. There are lots of message forums out there with a wealth of knowledge on them.
  2. try autosol, or rouge and a mop wheel on a pedestal grider. if the coating has deteriorated too far maybe its time to get it rechromed or consider a ceramic coating such as one from jet hot look at http://jet-hot.com.au/
  3. try NERV-DULL, cleans and polishes all metals
  4. Honda Chrome Polish
  5. eagle one chrome polish
  6. Simichrome polish by Happich
  7. Gelgloss, you can find it at grocery stores with the cleaning supplies. Good Stuff, Maynard!
  8. You did not say how bad the chrome plating was, so I will venture an answer. If you have rust or slight pitting, which I get on my bike just about every year, a hit of 0000 steel wool (Or in some places called 40 steel.) will work wonders with some chrome. The "wool" is so soft that it gets the defects and not the still good shape chrome. Problem here is you are talking vintage bike. The steel wool treatment may make the existing, in good shape chrome, flake at the edges. Just makes the matter worse. Had you given me more information on the year and make of the bike, I probably could have done better. I use the steel wool on my bike since it is not garaged, and rarely under a cover. It's an eight year old H-D FXDWG. Most of my trouble is with the handlebars and windscreen attachment hardware. The "4,0" makes it look better, but only with application of a good polish afterwards. And it don't last down here if Florida. On a vintage bike, I would be a bit wary of the steel wool. If it is just a daily rider, like my first year, first month, Dyna with the TC-88, I would go for it. But a bike that is actually worth a few bucks, I would leave it to the experts.(I hear my first year, first month Dyna ain't worth a crap. Yet. It's only eight years old.) When I actually polish the remaing good stuff I use "weenol". It's expensive, but it will last in bad weather. Never use the crap that comes in the can on the cotton. (I can't use the name. I don't want to have to go to court.) It strips the dirt and all junk, but leaves the chrome unprotected. Mostly light chrome like the stuff on the headlight, etc. I used a can (Part of a can.) on my old Sporty. I had big rust in just a short time. About killed my headlight cover. where I was having bug trouble. No bugs after I used it, but not much good looking chrome after using it.
  9. a good chrome polish and protector i use is "flitz"check it out at www.flitz.com i use it on my guns my '69 HD panhead as well as my bumpers and rims on my truck and it takes the rust off and protects the metal from rusting for over 6 months check it out
