Inch pounds. to foot pounds.?

There is a specification to tighten a series of bolts on my car to 22 inch pounds but my torque wrench measures in feet. I realize the simple conversion is 1 ft. = 0.833333333, but 22 inches converts to 1.8333333 ft. which is obviously too weak. I have to convert 22", 44", and 89". Can anyone help?

  1. divide by 12 to get foot lbs.
  2. The right tool for the right job. Why not just go and rent a torque wrench that is set up for inch/#'s? The larger wrench may not have the sensitivity to do the job right. Good luck with the repair. http://www.onlineconversion.com/torque.htm This site will help with the conversion.
  3. Just under two foot lbs.
  4. Depending on what bolts you are trying to tighten, You will either need an inch pound torque wrench or you can tighten the bolts and guess by hand. I'd use a 6" long wrench and lightly snug them up, then evenly tighten them 1/4th to 1/2 turn. If they are bolts on the valve body of an automatic tranny I'd borrow a torque wrench.
  5. divide the number by 12
  6. a foot pound torque wrench is not going to be accurate at that low setting.. I would not attempt it.. most ft lb torque wrenchs won't even go to a setting low enough to attempt those settings.. I agree with buy, rent or borrow a in-lb torque wrench if you want to do the job right...
  7. 12 in lbs=1 ft lb
  8. Lots of good advice. If the spec says 22 in lbs., then so be it. For example, valve cover bolts mustn't be torqued too tight or the valve cover will be bent, then it will leak. It's only backed up by the very flexible valve cover gasket...
