i need to use a torque wrench to tighten, but dont have one. is there a formula for standard wrenching?

- Nope. You must have a torque wrench or you'll fu*ck it up.
- It's unlikely, but if you can borrow a force gauge then you can use the formula torque = force x distance, where the distance is from the center of the nut to the point where the force was measured.
- Actually, it is simple. Five foot/pounds of torque is the same as putting a five pound weight exactly twelve inches out on a lever (breaker bar)when the rotation is around a horizontal plain. Best to check out your local tool rental stores. FYI, torque measuring 'devices' can be in inch/ounces, inch/pounds, foot/pounds; come in quarter inch drive, half inch, inch drives that I have used. But, importantly, the original answer, albiet vulgar, is true. If you need a torque wrench and don't use on you stand a very good chance of causing yourself big, extended, costly problems! Good luck!
